Former Alaska Sen. Mike Gravel, whose fierce anti-war views have earned him a coterie of online supporters, is protesting his exclusion from Democratic presidential debates with a psychedelic video posted this week on YouTube.

"Phony patriotism is jingoism," Gravel raps over a remix of John Lennon's "Give Peace a Chance" with flashy animations interspersed with clips of Democratic candidates and President Bush playing behind him. "Why won't you let me say what I want to say? Power to the people. Give peace a chance."

Gravel, whose gadfly candidacy seems to be gaining little traction beyond a few popular Internet videos, has been denied the opportunity to appear alongside Democratic candidates in any more debates this year. In earlier debate appearances, Gravel excoriated Democratic lawmakers who voted to let President Bush invade Iraq and now are criticizing the war, and he spoke out against the government's war on drugs, a topic most other candidates have avoided.

"Why are they afraid of the truth?" Gravel asks in the two-minute video.

Unmanned Aircraft System Will Help SWAT Units

MIAMI — The Miami-Dade police department will begin experimenting with high-tech drones as law enforcement tools beginning next year.

Although the military has been using unmanned aircraft systems for years, this will be the first time they are used in law enforcement.

"We are aware it is a great responsibility. The FAA is looking at us to see if we can professionally manage this program," said Lt. Cliff Nelson of the police department's aviation unit.

The flying camera is called a Micro Air Vehicle made by Honeywell. The MAV is remote controlled, unarmed and unmanned and can soar over 10,000 feet. (See the Micro Air Vehicle here.)

Miami-Dade police said only licensed pilots with the aviation unit will operate the devices because the airspace in the county is so busy.

Only the Miami-Dade police department and the Houston police department were given permission by the FAA to experiment with the drones.

"The capability of the unit is phenomenal," said Miami-Dade Detective Juan Villalba.

The unmanned aircraft will be used during SWAT team and tactical operations, especially when officers need video of a heavily armed suspect.

The Miami-Dade police department has not yet taken possession on its drone, but the Houston police department has and is already conducting tests.

Miami-Dade hopes to use grant money to pay for the MAV. Officials said the units are pricey. Depending on the complexity of the system, they can cost several thousand dollars to more than a million.

Local 2 Investigates Police Secrecy Behind Unmanned Aircraft Test

WALLER COUNTY, Texas — Houston police started testing unmanned aircraft and the event was shrouded in secrecy, but it was captured on tape by Local 2 Investigates.

Neighbors in rural Waller County said they thought a top-secret military venture was under way among the farmland and ranches, some 70 miles northwest of Houston. KPRC Local 2 Investigates had four hidden cameras aimed at a row of mysterious black trucks. Satellite dishes and a swirling radar added to the neighbors' suspense.

Then, cameras were rolling as an unmanned aircraft was launched into the sky and operated by remote control.

According to Jessica Lee of Indypendent and Kamau Karl Franklin of the
Center for Constitutional Rights, the Homegrown Terrorism Prevention Act
was penned with plenty of help from the RAND Corporation.

“Rep. Jane Harman, Democrat from California, has had a lengthy
relationship with the Rand Corporation,” Lee tells Democracy Now,
although she was unable to determine if RAND wrote the bill. On the 12th
anniversary of the OKC bombing, Rep. Harman, as chair of the Homeland
Security Subcommittee on Intelligence, Information Sharing and Terrorism
Risk Assessment, introduced the bill in the House of Representatives.

“The ‘Homegrown Terrorism Prevention Act of 2007' seeks to
address the roots causes of radicalization, and would establish a grant
program to provide funds to States to foster badly needed vertical information
sharing from the Intelligence Community to the local level and from local
sources to state and federal agencies,” explains Harman’s
website. “It also creates a Center of Excellence for the Prevention
of Radicalization and Home Grown Terrorism to examine the social, criminal,
political, psychological and economic roots of domestic terrorism and
to propose solutions, and promotes international collaboration on strategies
to combat radicalization.”
