Morning Edition, September 7, 2007 · Australia faces a crisis at home as it hosts a world summit. There are revelations of sexual abuse of children in aboriginal communities. The Australian legislature has responded with strict reforms, including banning alcohol and pornography on tribal lands, limiting how aboriginal families can spend welfare checks, and taking over many tribal governments. Many are critical of those steps because of Australia's bitter history with aboriginal people. Suzanne Smith, who broke the story for the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, speaks with Steve Inskeep.
